Should Women Submit To Abuse?

Does God expect a woman to submit to her husband if he’s abusing her? Is the command for a wife to submit to her husband more binding than the command for husbands to be gentle and respectful to their wives? And are there any examples in the Bible of a godly woman who disobeyed her own husband?

Join Monica Dennington as she goes straight to the Bible to find out why the Church must become a safe place for battered women, and whether God wants women to submit to abuse.

  1. Dear Monica,
Thank you for your heartfelt, scriptural message. I was one of those women who was baptized and married in the church, and yet was facing a very abusive man at the end of a gun barrel at home. I was in my early 20s, and I was depressed, helpless feeling and terrified. I kept my abuse secret, even from my family. God helped me to leave the relationship almost 30 years ago, but it cost me 20 years of mental distress. Thank God for Christian counselors. I was angry at God for allowing me to suffer such cruelty, when I had been faithful to my husband and to the Lord. Finally, in a vision, through prayer, God showed me that He was PRESENT, fighting for me, and protected me from being murdered. It changed my whole perspective. He had not abandoned me. God protected me from the ultimate punishment at the hands of my then husband. After the final incident in 1985, I went on to eventually marry a God-fearing, upright man, and to become a Christian songwriter and music publisher. God indeed made beauty out of the ashes in my life, and I am now able to minister to people throughout the world via the internet. I have shared your message with my 30,000 followers. I thank you, and hope that any woman who is in an abusive situation will consider the danger and get help. Call the domestic abuse hotline if you are in the United States. If you are not, I pray that God will give you someone you trust to help you, and to encourage you. When we say our marriage vows, and say “until death do us part” it was never meant that the death would/could come at the hands of our own husband!! Please, women, if you are being abused and can get out, get out!
