Charlottesville, Trump, & the Religious Right: Why Your Leaders Can’t Save You

Donald Trump appears to have taken a play out of the Southern Baptist Convention’s playbook.

This summer, the Southern Baptist Convention made a critical error in our country’s struggle for racial reconciliation. When presented with a resolution to condemn the Alt-right and white supremacist movements, they initially declined to bring it to a vote.

Only after a public outcry did they pass the resolution, naming these groups what they are: hate groups.

After the violence in Charlottesville this weekend, Trump followed in their footsteps— play by play.

He failed to condemn these groups by name, until the public outcry grew so great that he finally conceded.

And even then, it was with caveats.

Your President repeated the blunder of your pastors.

The End Of Justice

Our world tells us we are modern. Modern, civil rights-minded people. We are enlightened, our minds liberated from the chains of ignorance, our souls untainted by the stain of the prejudice of our fathers.

They were too good to share a water fountain with their black brothers, a livable wage with their own workers, or the right to vote with their own moms. Yes, these were the ones who killed our modern-day prophets, who put the bullet through Dr. King’s chin.

Sado-Satanists to Lead Prayer in Phoenix?: Unmasking Misogyny

Phoenix is the most recent battlefront in the war on religious freedom waged by the Satanic Temple. The group’s stated purpose is to force the removal of any evidence of faith from public life— like student-led prayer in Florida, the Ten Commandments monuments in Oklahoma and Arkansas, a nativity scene in Detroit— and now the opening invocation for the Phoenix City Council.

Parma (127 Miles): Story Behind the Song

Later today, in memory of my mother-in-law, I will be posting my new song: “Parma”.

I wrote this song on my journey to and from the childhood home of my father- and mother-in law. It holds a lot of meaning for me, so I thought that while you wait to hear it, I would share the story behind the song. The lyrics are at the end.
